Becoming human, again.
Back to basics.
It’s time to become human, again.
It seems as though many people have lost their way in the modern world. A world which seems to prioritise passively living and expressing through screens and algorithms over genuine connection and understanding. A world easily polarised and divided by short form content and snapshot takes on what are usually conversations and topics which require much more depth and focus. You can’t fight for more peace in the world via 60 second instagram stories and shares. We are living in a world of fragmented and exhausted mental attention and until we re-learn how to approach life in a more balanced and authentic way, we will continue on this hamster wheel of inflamed emotions and disconnection to others and the world around us.
Within the space of 20 seconds, you can witness the horror of war and all the graphic content that can come with it, whilst simultaneously witnessing a friend get married, buy a new house or celebrate a new promotion in their career. This isn’t to minimise the issues that plague the world but, that type of rapid filtering plays havoc on your senses and psychological wellbeing, especially over a long enough period of time. Before I continue, however, let me make it clear that this isn’t a teardown of social media and the internet as a whole. Without the benefits of the internet, I wouldn’t be able to attempt in sharing my message and perspective in the hopes of contrasting against the low vibrations of junk food media and information and the polarised personalities we find across most areas of the internet, usually in a comments section trying their best to tear the other side down.
No, I write because not only is this a space for myself to express and understand better as a human living in the current landscape. It can also hopefully become a space for others to escape to when they want to discuss and go deep on topics, building through words, conversation and mutual respect, whether we sometimes agree to disagree. There’s enough echo chambers already in existence across the internet and if you ask me, personally speaking, that’s where human understanding and growth goes to die.
